Things to Do in Como, NSW: A Local’s Half-Day Guide
Como is one of the Sutherland Shire’s quietest riverside corners, and it packs more into a small patch than most people expect: a heritage rail bridge you can walk across, a 130-year-old park on the river bank, a marina with boats for hire, and a summer swimming spot. If you’re looking for things to do in Como, NSW, here’s how to fill a morning or a whole day, with brunch at Como Marina Bay Cafe worked in at the right moment.
Walk or Cycle Across the Como Rail Bridge
The Como Rail Bridge was built in 1885 and is described as the longest single-track lattice girder bridge in New South Wales. It’s heritage listed, and the old rail track was converted into a cycleway and footpath that opened in 1985, exactly 100 years after the bridge was built.
Today you can walk, jog or cycle across it to Oatley. It’s flat, and it suits families with young children. If you’re starting from Oatley, the Oatley to Como walkway runs about 800 metres from the end of Myra Place to the Como Railway Bridge, so the walk works in either direction.

Picnic at Como Pleasure Grounds
Como Pleasure Grounds opened in 1895 to celebrate the railway reaching southern Sydney, and it’s still one of the best spots in the Shire for a riverside picnic. You’ll find barbecues, picnic tables, native gardens and a playground right on the river bank. The playground equipment echoes the style of the old RazzleDazzle circular ride that was once the park’s big attraction.
It’s within walking distance of Como Marina Bay Cafe, which makes it an easy pairing: let the kids burn off energy first, then walk over for brunch.
Hire a Boat at Como Marina
Como Marina is often called the gateway to the Georges River, and boats are available for hire from the marina. Even if you’re not heading out on the water, the marina is worth a wander. Watching boats come and go is half the appeal of eating here.
The Georges River has a long history of exploration, too. The council’s heritage notes link the river to the explorers Bass and Flinders, who sailed it in 1795.
Cool Off at the Tidal Baths (Summer Only)
Below the Como swimming complex are the tidal baths on the river, free to use and open in summer only. They’re a classic Shire summer splash, though the council’s own guide warns you may leave with muddy feet. Check the current season and conditions before you go.
Browse the Como Markets
On the second Sunday of each month (except January), Como Public School hosts a market from 9am to 3pm with around 40 stalls of food, coffee, antiques, crafts and handmade goods. If your visit lands on a market Sunday, it fits neatly between a bridge walk and brunch.
